Course Details

Brian and Jane from Brass and Glass Photographic Alchemy are coming to Inverlochy to teach this exciting, introductory workshop. You will see the magic of silver and light combining to create a 19th century tintype. Beginning with a short Powerpoint presentation into the history and process with original historic images to view. You will then have the opportunity to craft your own portrait tintype. With care, your priceless heirloom photograph will last for decades without fading or changing colour. Tintypes are created in an authentic bellows camera, processed under red light in a darkroom, then washed, dried and varnished.

The first step in tintype photography (also known as ferrotypes or melainotypes) is to lacquer a metal plate with collodion emulsion.  The metal plate is inserted into the camera(shown in the second photo on our website).  A photo is taken which imprints the negative image onto the plate.  Then we move to the darkroom where you learn how the plates are coated, sensitized, exposed and developed. The negative is developed in the dark room where the image develops. A fixing agent is applied to protect the image.  Following that, participants will practice pouring/coating a plate which they will then use the large wooden camera to shoot a plate of themselves. They coat, pose, expose and develop their own plate which they will take away with them at the end of the workshop.

All materials provided.
