Creative Expression for Seniors 2022-23

Over 2022-23, we delivered two free art programmes for Wellington seniors: first as Mindful Art Group for Seniors, and later as Creative Expression for Seniors. Both were a great success, with high demand and overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Each course was delivered over two four-week blocks by Inverlochy tutors Sue Quigley and Cecilia Denen, with generous support from the Wellington City Council’s Creative Communities Scheme.

Despite some COVID-related scheduling challenges, all sessions were fully booked, and a waitlist ensured that available spots were quickly filled. In total, 26 participants took part, enjoying weekly classes that built artistic confidence and created meaningful social connection.

Sessions included activities such as blind drawing, still-life drawing and self-portraits, with participants responding enthusiastically:

"I really enjoyed the blind drawing—it gave me the confidence to start drawing."
"Love the tutors and the ambience of the place."

Importantly, the course also supported community building. One group, organised through the Strathmore Community Centre, carpooled together and continued to socialise regularly outside of class. The chatter and laughter coming from the studio each Friday morning was a joy to hear. Participants not only developed their skills and appreciated the teaching and facilities—they also thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Many have since returned to enroll in other courses at Inverlochy, which has been wonderful to see.

Our only disappointment? That due to financial constraints, we couldn’t offer it to more people! We’re incredibly proud of the joy, confidence, and connection this programme created—and we hope to expand it in the future to meet the clear and growing demand.
