Course Details

Dramatic landforms catch my eye and intrigue me and I desire to portray the forms in watercolour. Learn how to capture the light on the ridges and define the shadows in the valleys. I share my approach with my students by sharing the colours to use, how to start and how to proceed step by step. In this two-day workshop you will use the core techniques of watercolour to paint landforms. We will refresh our knowledge of washes and edges, then use them to create beautiful landscape paintings.

Charlotte will demonstrate her watercolour painting techniques using bright colours and good quality materials She uses an overhead camera projected onto a 42-inch TV for easy step by step instruction. .The course will cover strategies for building a composition, delicate washes and how to achieve spatial depth in landscapes.

Please note this is not a beginners class and you must bring your own materials. This workshop is for intermediate to advanced watercolour painters.

What to bring -
Paints:  We will use the basics: Raw Sienna, Alizarin, Cobalt as primary colours, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, Viridian, Quinacridone Gold and Indigo - but bring all the other colours and brands you regularly use.
Paper: Bring 4 quarter sheets - quality 100% cotton paper 300gsm watercolour paper for good results. Buy a full sheet (76 x 56 cm) and tear into four quarter sheets for the four paintings we will make over the weekend, or good quality A3 pad is OK. Cold pressed, hot pressed or rough - I recommend Arches, Saunders Waterford. Bring extra paper for the exercises.
Brushes: Bring your favourite brushes including a large mop and Hake for wetting large areas quickly. There will brushes for purchase.
Bring all the usual paraphernalia for painting including water container, masking tape, pencil, ruler, rubber, cloth, tissues, spray bottle, hair dryer. I usually work flat on the table or prop up the board.

One hour lunch each day - bring a packed lunch to enjoy in our historic house or explore the local Te Aro cafes. Coffee and tea provided at lunch.
