Chemigrams: Making Camera-less Photographs with Chemistry and Chance T4.25

Course Details

This weekend workshop will introduce you to the chemigram, a camera-less darkroom process that uses resists and chemistry to create striking abstract imagery on photographic paper.

In this day-long darkroom workshop, we’ll explore the abstract photographic process of the chemigram. We’ll use photo paper, photo chemistry, ‘organic’ chemistry (such as vinegar, baking soda, citric acid) and a range of resists, as well as potentially incorporating foliage or organic materials to create evocative and atmospheric camera-less photographs.

Popularised in the 1960s, the chemigram allows you to create abstract patterns and shapes, while exploring the fundamentals of camera-less photography – light, chemistry, surface, time – and the element of chance. You’ll leave the workshop with a series of engaging photographic abstractions and a new perspective on what photography can be.

All materials included. 

You must be at least 16 years of age to attend this course. 

One hour lunch - bring a packed lunch to have in our historic home or explore the local cafes in Te Aro.
