Entries for ' awards'

Salon des Refuses Inverlochy Portrait Exhibition.

Salon des Refuses Inverlochy Portrait Exhibition.

You may have heard of  New Zealand's Adam Portrait Award?

New Zealand's  'premier' annual competition for portraiture.

Recently the first prize of $15,00 was won by Auckland-based artist Stephen Martyn Welch for his self- portrait - '3 Nights, A Mirror & Loads of Coffee'.  (Right)

The judge was Dr Christopher Chapman, senior curator at the Australian National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

The wining picture and many of the other entries are currently on display at the Portrait Gallery in Wellington.

Until fairly recently all media were accepted for the award including  painting, drawing, photography and sculpture.

Inverlochy artist and tutor - Denise Durkin - decided  these criteria were a little bit restrictive!

"I began imagining an exhibition - Salon des Refuses - held simultaneously embracing portraits that were outside this narrow standard, either because of their media or the judging choices. With enthusiasm from friends I have set out to achieve this exhibition. Inverlochy’s supportive environment has made it possible this year and perhaps a by-annual event.

If anyone is interested in exhibiting a portrait in any medium they should get in touch with Denise at  - [email protected] - or just drop the work into the art school (between 9-5pm weekdays)by this Thursday the 1rst of March.

Or just come to the opening on Friday the 2nd of March at the Art School between 5.30 - 7.30pm. The show runs in the gallery in the tea/coffee room until March 9th.
