Course Details

Using the classic rules of proportion you will develop the skills to draw a portrait of a person. Our experienced tutor and artist will demonstrate techniques to “capture a likeness”. A live model will sit for an hour and you will apply those techniques to observe carefully and capture proportions and a likeness. Next you will work from photographs and draw the model in various exercises, using pencil and paint. Finally you will paint a portrait in watercolour using all the techniques and new found skills.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Understand and apply some standard proportions for drawing the human face
- Use watercolour painting techniques to bring form to the portrait
- Complete a finished portrait in burnt sienna and watercolour flesh tones

This course is suitable for watercolour beginners and those developing their skills. We provide basic materials or you can bring your own watercolour paints, palette, brushes, 300gsm watercolour rough paper.  Please bring pencils and A4 sketch book.

Bring a packed lunch or explore the local Te Aro cafes.
