ABC of PAINTING -Towards Independence - Tutor: Pippa Sanderson

During Term 4 we will work on student directed projects, making a series of work to hang in the end of year exhibition. We will continue to explore media and methods of painting, but more focused on each student’s particular needs. New students welcome – some painting experience necessary. All basic materials provided (you may have to purchase canvas, frames etc). NB This class is four hours per week. (No class Labour Day Oct 27, make-up is Dec 15). – First week (Oct 20) to be made up at a negotiated time with Pippa.

Have you always wanted to paint but feel like you need help to get a grip on the basics? Have you tried painting but found your results disappointing? Don't fear! With a focus on considered, personal instruction, Christine will lead you through a series of fun modules designed to give you the skills and momentum to paint on your own.   MAKING ART AT INVERLOCHY -Tutor: Basia Smolnicki   NEW!                                       

                                            

This is a beginner’s introduction to art. Spend the first two weeks drawing a figure model and then develop your sketches into a painting experimenting with acrylic and traditional oil paints. By this stage you will be able to take your ideas into the print studio and translate a drawing into a simple etching. The last two weeks will focus on creating the figure as a sculpture with clay to produce a three dimensional form. All basic materials provided. (No class Labour Day Oct 27, make-up is Dec 15).

 PORTRAIT DRAWING AND PAINTING - STAGE 2 - Tutor: Janice Kingston

Designed for those who have completed Portrait drawing and Painting Stage 1 or for those have had some experience in portraiture. We will extend existing skills in gaining a likeness, anatomy and drawing techniques. Janice will cover tone, colour mixing and composition in more depth and we will study methods different artists have used to convey mood and character. The anatomy of the whole figure will be included to gain an understanding of how underlying structure affects the clothed from. Hands will be studied in detail. Individual preferences in style and media will be encouraged and developed. Basic materials and life model sessions provided. Returning students will be challenged.

Hey if you enjoyed Get Up And Get Painting why not keep on painting? This course is designed to build on the ideas explored in Get Up And Get Painting and also introduce a whole new set of concepts and techniques to push your work to the next level. Suitable for anybody with some previous painting and drawing experience; returning students will be challenged. Once again basic concepts will be explored by investigation with still life painting and these will be applied to the students own work throughout the course. ON THE TERPS - OIL PAINTING FOR EVERYONE - Tutor: Christine Gregory

Originally people were taught how to paint using oil paints. Acrylics became the substitute medium along with the belief these paints were easier and less messy. This is not necessarily so and people have retained a love and aspiration to paint in oils. Christine has an encouraging, lively way of working with students returning to the medium or beginners. The techniques of alla prima and glazing in a step by step process will be taught making the transition from acrylics to oils an enjoyable discovery. All basic materials provided.

We begin with a traditional approach, studying facial structure and anatomy, proportion and gaining likeness, tonal values, composition and drawing techniques. Watercolour with its transparency and freshness lends itself to many different styles and techniques from very detailed to bold and free. Create your own artwork to compliment your living space while expanding your thinking and creative process. Jane, an experienced artist/interior decorator, will help you complete a contemporary painting for your home. You will explore other artists’ works, art history, texture, mixed media, collage, colour, pattern, shape, form, using crayon, pencil, brushwork and acrylic paint effects.  FLORAL ART IN WATERCOLOUR - Tutor: Caroline Hillier

Flowers, with their detailed form and beautiful colour, lend themselves to a variety of artistic interpretations and styles and watercolour is an ideal medium for this branch of painting. This workshop aims to extend the skills of those who already paint in watercolour, as well as for newcomers. We will start with drawing in pencil, and then move on to using colour. Various approaches to the subject will be considered, from fine detailed work to bold, free painting. Watercolour paper and basic watercolour paints provided. INNOVATIVE PAINTING LANDSCAPE TECHNIQUES - Tutor: Margaret Elliot

This workshop provides the opportunity to explore the expressive possibilities of working with the landscape and its dynamic processes as a starting point for painting. There will be two filed trips to draw and paint outdoors providing studies as a basis for painting in the studio on canvas or board. Practical instruction will be given in the use of painting media, including colour mixing and how to develop raw ideas in sketchbooks to the painting stage. You will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of painting techniques exploring the possibilities of layered and textured surfaces.
