MAKING ART AT INVERLOCHY - Tutor: Basia Smolnicki NEW!

This is a beginner’s introduction to art. Spend the first two weeks drawing a figure model and then develop your sketches into a painting experimenting with acrylic and traditional oil paints. By this stage you will be able to take your ideas into the print studio and translate a drawing into a simple etching. The last two weeks will focus on creating the figure as a sculpture with clay to produce a three dimensional form. All basic materials provided. (No class Labour Day Oct 27, make-up is Dec 15).

Designed for those who have completed Portrait drawing and Painting Stage 1 or for those have had some experience in portraiture. We will extend existing skills in gaining a likeness, anatomy and drawing techniques. Janice will cover tone, composition and colour mixing in more depth and we will study methods different artists have used to convey mood and character. The anatomy of the whole figure will be included to gain an understanding of how underlying structure affects the clothed form. Hands and self portraits will be studied in detail. Individual preferences in style and media will be encouraged and developed. Basic materials and life model sessions provided. Returning students will be challenged.

Learn the ancient and beautiful art of calligraphy, beginning with the absolute basics and moving on to the italic hand. It doesn’t matter if you’re right or left handed or if your handwriting isn’t the best – anyone can learn. Bring along any calligraphic pens you might already have, but don’t worry if you don’t have any. Explore this fascinating subject and develop accurate observation and competence in drawing and painting skills. We begin with a traditional approach, studying facial structure and anatomy, proportion and gaining likeness, tonal values, composition and drawing techniques. A great course for those wishing to begin or extend their understanding of drawing, tone and colour using a direct and mess-free medium. Colour pencil and pastel pencils are an excellent media for any subject, from travel sketches to richly coloured finished work. They incorporate methods used in both painting and drawing, such as layering to produce depth of tone, colour and expressive line. Beginning with still life we will progress to landscape (outdoors when possible) and to any subject and style of your choice. We will also experiment with pastel sticks and watercolour pencils. Beginners will be guided with basic drawing techniques and colour mixing. Those with experinece will be challenged to see colour and line in new ways. All basic materials provided.

COMBINE FIGURE DRAWING AND DRY POINT ETCHING -

This is an opportunity to draw directly from the life model by immediately scratching into the surface of a sheet of Perspex or soft polmer using a sharp point, needle, sandpaper, etc. The morning will be spent drawing/etching the figure in to the plate, and the afternoon making prints in the print studio. The prepared dry point surface will be linked up and the image transferred to paper through use of the printing press. All materials provided.

Pen and ink and ink drawing is a versatile artistic medium with a wide variety of styles developed over the centuries and up to the present day where it has particular application in book illustration.
