MAKING ART AT INVERLOCHY - Tutor: Basia Smolnicki  NEW!

This is a beginner’s introduction to art. Spend the first two weeks drawing a figure model and then develop your sketches into a painting experimenting with acrylic and traditional oil paints. By this stage you will be able to take your ideas into the print studio and translate a drawing into a simple etching. The last two weeks will focus on creating the figure as a sculpture with clay to produce a three dimensional form. All basic materials provided. (No class Labour Day Oct 27, make-up is Dec 15).

Come along to extend your life drawing practice. This is a very pleasant, informal and relaxed group that have been meeting at Inverlochy for years. Bring your own materials. Easels and facilities provided.

  PORTRAIT DRAWING AND PAINTING - STAGE 2 - Tutor: Janice Kingston

Designed for those who have completed Portrait drawing and Painting Stage 1 or for those have had some experience in portraiture. We will extend existing skills in gaining a likeness, anatomy and drawing techniques. Janice will cover tone, composition and colour mixing in more depth and we will study methods different artists have used to convey mood and character. The anatomy of the whole figure will be included to gain an understanding of how underlying structure affects the clothed form. Hands and self portraits will be studied in detail. Individual preferences in style and media will be encouraged and developed. Basic materials and life model sessions provided. Returning students will be challenged.

 CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING FROM SCRATCH - Tutor: Alice Masters

 Learn the ancient and beautiful art of calligraphy, beginning with the absolute basics and moving on to the italic hand. It doesn’t matter if you’re right or left handed or if your handwriting isn’t the best – anyone can learn. Bring along any calligraphic pens you might already have, but don’t worry if you don’t have any.  All materials provided, but you might feel that you want to buy yourself a pen (or some nibs) as the course progresses.

 Drawing is fundamentally an act of interpretation which enlists our sense of perception, understanding and experience. This course will introduce a strategy for drawing the human figure. Each exercise offers a concept that supports the art and craft of drawing. The ideas offered are time-tried methods to help the student visualize the human form and begin to handle their drawing convincingly. Explore this fascinating subject and develop accurate observation and competence in drawing and painting skills. We begin with a traditional approach, studying facial structure and anatomy, proportion and gaining likeness, tonal values, composition and drawing techniques. Colour mixing will be covered thoroughly for those wishing to use pastel or paint. After looking at styles of portraiture throughout history, a life model will be provided. You choose your media – pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic or oil. All basic materials and life models provided. Some drawing experience is desirable.

 LANDSCAPE AND INTERIORS IN COLOUR PENCIL AND PASTEL - Tutor: Janice Kingston

A great course for those wishing to begin or extend their understanding of drawing, tone and colour using a direct and mess-free medium. Colour pencil and pastel pencils are an excellent media for any subject, from travel sketches to richly coloured finished work. They incorporate methods used in both painting and drawing, such as layering to produce depth of tone, colour and expressive line. Beginning with still life we will progress to landscape (outdoors when possible) and to any subject and style of your choice. We will also experiment with pastel sticks and watercolour pencils. Beginners will be guided with basic drawing techniques and colour mixing. Those with experinece will be challenged to see colour and line in new ways. All basic materials provided.

This introductory course teaches the technical skills of drawing, using a variety of mediums, including pen and ink, charcoal, pencil and pastel. We will do excercises in a range of formal skills: quality of line, understanding form, composition of elements on the format that will lead to finding your own means o0f expression. Discover the interesting history of the genre and about some of the great artists and writers who have made this field their own. Learn how to write, draw and layout cartoons in a variety of formats.  This life-drawing course will provide you with the basic strategies you need to draw the figure convincingly and expressively. You will learn how to capture the figure in quick sketches, how to approach sustained studies and develop the ability to draw what you see using a lively, sensitive line. Learn how to construct and develop a drawing using Old Masters techniques. This class is especially for beginners. You will learn ink and wash techniques using a steel dip pen and coloured inks, perfect for painting studies! All basic materials provided.

COMBINE FIGURE DRAWING AND DRY POINT ETCHING -

Tutor: Basia Smolnicki                                                                                                                        NEW!

This is an opportunity to draw directly from the life model by immediately scratching into the surface of a sheet of Perspex or soft polmer using a sharp point, needle, sandpaper, etc. The morning will be spent drawing/etching the figure in to the plate, and the afternoon making prints in the print studio. The prepared dry point surface will be linked up and the image transferred to paper through use of the printing press. All materials provided.

This one-day workshop is focused on learning and developing skills with these three drawing media. BODIES IN SPACE - Tutor: Cecilia Denen                                                                                   

Further your life drawing skills and look into the possibilities of mark-making, use of dry and wet media, and composition skills to describe the human form in the surrounding space as a means of individual expression.  Pen and ink and ink drawing is a versatile artistic medium with a wide variety of styles developed over the centuries and up to the present day where it has particular application in book illustration. In this course we will commence using pencil drawings as a basis for finished pen and ink studies. A range of styles will be explored: bold and expressive, as well as fine detailed, leading on to the use of coloured ink. A list of optional materials and equipment will be sent to you on enrolment.
