Inverlochy Art School, in central Wellington, offers a fabulous range of highest quality part time art classes taught by enthusiastic and talented practicing artists. Our classes are small and fees usually include all materials. Inverlochy is a friendly and welcoming community of artists, we offer beginner classes and ongoing progressive classes for advanced practitioners. Our courses are designed for all levels of ability and are taught in a friendly and informal environment. We have a maximum student limit for each course, giving you the best tutor/student ratio possible.

We are located in the atmospheric, grade II listed, historic Inverlochy House in the Te Aro district of Wellington.

Please Note: Most classes need a minimum number of 5 people to run, on occasions a class may run with fewer students at the discretion of the tutor/management.

Please feel free to invite friends to enrol for a course; any social media exposure and sharing course details would be much appreciated and will help Inverlochy run more courses in the future.

Beginning to See the Light – tonal portrait painting

Day 1

We experiment with drawing techniques that aid basic proportion and gesture, in order to achieve an accurate likeness of your subject, and to help you understand the essential principles which underpin good representational painting.  You will transfer your drawing to canvas and create a tonal study using oil or acrylic. Students may bring their own images to this class or use images supplied by the tutor, with emphasis on choosing images with dramatic lighting to give the illusion of depth.

 Day 2

Monochrome painting bridges the gap between drawing and painting in colour. Once the essential tonal principles have been mastered in charcoal or graphite, you will create a monochromatic portrait in paint using a 5 value scale, thus eliminating the added complication of colour.

Day 3 - 4

The focus on Day 3 and 4 is on creating a finished portrait based on a previous tonal study. We will discuss techniques in acrylic and oil that will facilitate your desired outcome. We will use a limited palette to better achieve an understanding of value, temperature and hue, though if you are very experienced an extended palette may be used. This course will be an introduction to the complex and varied skills you will need to create a successful portrait, whilst challenging you to develop an individual creative approach. There may be an option to continue for another day if needed, to complete your work.
